Spain, World Cup bronze medalists, beat Olympic Champions Australia 3-2 in the Champions Trophy hockey tournament here on Wednesday.
This was Australia’s second defeat here. They had also lost to South Korea 0-1.
Australia are now on nine points with Spain on five. Spain went into the lead in the 10th minute itself with Eduard Tubau successfully converting a penalty corner.
Santiago Freixa made it 2-0 but Australia came back through a Luke Doerner goal in the 41st. Spain increased the lead to 3-1 in the 51st minute off Jordi Clapes.
Nathan Eglington scored the second for the Olympic champions but Spain held on to the lead to emerge winners.
