She wakes you up screaming...She wrecks your day and tells you how bad it's really going to be...She pokes fun at you, prods you and completely psyches you. And to top it all, she cracks her trademark 'worshtest Pjs'. And then she dares you to go live on air with her when she calls you’ goes Radio Mirchi’s campaign for its newest offering- ‘Pori Tapori Rachna’ on the new morning drive time show ‘Hi Bangalore’. And RJ Rachna is quintessentially all that.
Rachna, who was born and brought up in Bangalore, worked for a regional television channel for five years after which she decided to try her hand at radio jockeying.
And this decision has borne rich dividents. Today, Rachna is easily one of the most popular RJs in the city.
Natural choice
Having been a motormouth in school, Rjing seems to have been a natural choice for her. Her confession about her dislike for the regular jobs which she terms as a monotonous affair justifies her description of her job. Says Rachna, “Rjing offers a platform for being creative, voice your opinion and throws a new challenge everyday.”
According to her, there are not too many qualities that one requires to become an Rj. “One just needs to have a reasonably good voice, a fair command over language, the confidence to talk and justify what you are saying. You should be able to prove that a crow is white if you have made that claim.” Most importantly, you need to be yourself and definitely have a sense of humour,” is a point this popular RJ asserts.
She agrees that Rjing is a more difficult task compared to veejaying and reasons that an Rj is expected to do more than just talking unlike in television where there is one person behind every aspect of prodution. Rachna also predicts an upward trend in the availability of job opportunities in the radio sector owing to the ever increasing number of radio stations. She feels that this growing number promotes a healthy competition which inturn promotes the urge to work more efficiently.
Speaking about her job, Rachna refuses to believe that her job is hectic. “You treat the show as your own and that somehow brings with it a sense of responsibility.
“You want to give it your everything to make it a success.”
She admits that a lot of background work goes into making a single show as it is unforgiveable to goof-up when the entire city is listening to you.
On Kannada music She expresses joy at the drastic improvement in the quality of Kannada music and partly attributes the change to the music of the hit film ‘Mungaru Male.’
Shahrukh Khan is one person she would love to get on her show though that appears unlikely as Mirchi is a Kannada-based channel.
Rachna has been working for Radio Mirchi for the past one-and-a -half years now and has thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Ask her about her show and she quips enthusiastically, “‘Hi Bangalore’ is a fun show which is all laughter and no logic. Laughter is addictive and when you serve it on a platter, anyone will buy it.”
Show timings The show which is aired between 7 am to 11 am from Monday to Saturday includes programmes like ‘Tapori Take’, ‘worshtest Pj’- an on-air classroom that teaches listeners one really bad joke, ‘PT Pada’- a daily dose of Kannada lingo, ‘PT Time’- a health tip a day focussing on food, exercise and more and ‘Horror Scope’- a funny take on horoscopes and faltoo predictions.
Listeners also get an opportunity to co-host the show with her by paricipating in a contest.
All in all, Rachna is as much fun as her show and the station she works for. Like in her words, “life is all about having fun at Mirchi.”
