Noted lyricist Javed Akhtar on Friday approached the Supreme Court seeking direction for action against Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for allegedly admitting at a public meeting that Sohrabuddin Sheikh and his wife Kausarbi were killed in a fake encounter two years back.
In a petition, Mr Akhtar said, “Now a shocking admission with regard to at least one fake encounter death, of Sohrabuddin, has come from none other than the present Chief Minister of the state.”
After preliminary arguments a bench headed by Justice Tarun Chatterjee posted the matter for detailed arguments on Monday. Apart from the registration of an FIR, the petition sought direction for immediate constitution of a special investigating team to probe the alleged involvement of Modi in the fake encounter. A similar petition was also filed by Rubabuddin Sheikh, Sohrabuddin’s brother, seeking a CBI probe.
“It is well known that the Chief Minister on account of his position can always influence the police machinery,” said the petition filed by advocate Dushyant Dave. Sohrabuddin and his wife were allegedly killed on November 26, 2005 in a fake encounter.
