Mysore men pipped Bangalore 33-32 in extra-time to win the State Games handball gold in an edge-of-the-seat contest at the Chamundi Vihar Stadium here on Saturday.
However, Bangalore women took revenge by defeating Mysore 12-10 in the women's final.
In a gripping finale that was held up by rain in the morning, Bangalore men had only themselves to blame after squandering a 17-10 lead at the half-time. The teams were tied 29-29 in the first half and the score read 32-32 after the completion of the first five minutes of extra-time.
With the match headed for a shootout, pivot Saifuddin delivered the knockout punch with a neat goal from the right wing with just 30 seconds to go for the final whistle.
Referee Anil Kumar had a busy day as he flashed five yellow cards in the game that saw some rough tackles, especially in the second half.
The Bangalore defence looked solid in the first half, with Premnath doing a fine job. But it crumbled in the wake of some sharp shooting from Srikanth and Jaikumar who scored nine and seven goals respectively for the winners.
Bangalore custodian Yedunandan excelled in front of the crosspiece and made some brilliant saves – including a couple of seven-metre throws, but his efforts went in vain as the homeside had the final say.
Basketball
In men’s basketball, KSP frittered away a three-point lead at the halfway mark to go down 56-77 to ASC in the semifinal. ASC will play MEG in the final after the latter upset Vijaya Bank 69-41 in the second semifinal.
The women’s semifinal, between IBBC and Mysore Sports Hostel, had to be halted thanks to a leaking roof at the indoor stadium.
Neelamma triumphs
Meanwhile, KSP's Neelamma M bagged three gold medals in the cycling events which got underway here on Saturday.
