Hymamshu Jyothi Kala Peetha and Nirmala Rani High School registered contrasting victories to clinch boys’ and girls’ titles respectively in the Rotary Bangalore Indiranagar inter-school basketball tournament at the Sree Kanteerava outdoor courts here on Saturday.
Hymamshu hoopsters dished out a dominating show to dash the title hopes of Kairalee Nilayam High School 45-31 while Nirmala Rani girls held their nerves to prevail over fighting Bishop Cotton Girls’ School 37-31.
In the first encounter of the evening, Nirmala Rani put behind a listless first quarter performance to edge out Cottons in an absorbing contest. The latter had opened up a early 6-1 lead in the match with Aanchel leading the charge for Cottons.
However, Nirmala Rani seized the initiative in the ensuing quarter with player of the tournament Sushmitha pouring in some crucial three-pointers. Nirmala Rani led 17-14 at the halfway stage.
Then, Cottons brought life back into the match with some pacy scoring to level the scores 26-26 at the end of the third quarter. In a gripping final quarter, Nirmala Rani stayed positive by regularly going for three-pointers to gain a comfortable lead.
On the other hand, Cottons committed too many errors, particularly in the defence, to squander the opportunity and title as their rivals scored 11 points in the fourth quarter to close the match at 37-31.
Sushmitha scored a match-high 20 points including five three-pointers for the winners while Aanchel was the top-scorer for Cottons with 13 points.
Meanwhile, it was almost one-way traffic in the boys’ decider as Hymamshu rode on a sparkling show by R Yashas (21 points) to easily sail past Kairalee.
