Chopra slumps to tied 64th
A triple bogey on the back nine took the wind out of Daniel Chopra’s sail and the Swede slumped to tied 64th after en erratic second round of three-over 75 at the AT&T Pebble Beach golf tournament, reports PTI from Peeble Beach, US. His 36-hole aggregate of even par 144.
American Tim Heron totalled 137 for a one shot lead over compatriots Robert Floyd (70), Michael Allen (70), JB Homes (70) and Nicholas Thompson (69).
Bindra wins bronze in Holland
Ace marksman Abhinav Bindra has won the bronze medal in the 10m air rifle event at the European Circuit Intershoot Den Haag in Holland, reports PTI from Chandigarh.
Bindra scored 699.2 points to secure third place. The gold went to Moldoveanu Alin George of Romania who finished with a score of 700.5, just ahead of Valerian Sauveplane of France (700.2).
AC lounge at Mohali damaged
The air-conditioned lounge at the Punjab Cricket Association stadium was completely damaged in a fire here on Saturday, reports PTI from Chandigarh. The fire broke out in the afternoon when renovation work was in progress in the AC lounge.
Railways retain hockey title
Indian Railways defeated Jharkhand 3-1 on Saturday to retain the senior National women’s hockey title for the 23rd time in a row, reports PTI from Jalandhar.
Railways took lead in the eighth minute through Suman Bala’s short corner conversion. Railways doubled their lead in the 27th minute through Asunta Lakra. Jharkhand pulled one back when Susila Lakra converted a penalty corner in the 52nd minute. Suman Bala scored the third goal for Railways in the 62nd minute to seal the win.
Earlier, Bombay pipped Haryana 4-3 to finish third.
Yakubu stars in Mahindras’ win
Spearheaded by a brace from Ghanian Yusif Yakubu, Mahindra United outclassed Goan outfit Sporting Clube de Goa 3-0 in the I-League football match on Saturday, reports PTI from Mumbai.
Man of the match Yakubu scored in the 31st and 51st. Sushant Mathew scored in the 75th. Mahindra have 24 points, while Clube have 17.
At Margao, a goal from Bevan D’Mello (65th) enabled bottom-placed Salgaocar Sports Club beat Viva Kerala 1-0, adds UNI. Salgaocar have 10 points, while Viva have 12.
League leaders Dempo were held to a goalless draw by Mohun Bagan. After 16 matches, defending champions Dempo remain on top of the table with 32 points while Bagan are placed third with 28 points.
CA deny clearing Gilchrist
Cricket Australia have denied that it has celared Adam Gilchrist for the BCCI-backed Indian Premier League. While there is no suggestion that CA will stop the retiring wicketkeeper-batsman from playing in the Twenty20 competition, he had not yet been granted permission. “We have not signed a no-objection certificate and Adam is still on contract,” CA said.
