The week-long meet, held jointly by the Department of Youth Services and Sports and Karnataka Olympics Association, saw competitions in 24 disciplines with the events being held in Mysore and Mandya.
"During the Dasara Games held here, we held competition in only 14 events. Now we have succeeded in almost doubling that figure. The fact that we could draw large crowd for games like volleyball shows just go to show that how successful the meet was. We hope to continue from here," said Amar Kumar Pandey, DYSS Commissioner .
Though 28 sportspersons including Khel Ratna awardee Pankaj Advani were to be felicitated, only six including Dhyanchand awardee Uday K Prabhu, wheel-chair athlete Malati Holla and former Indian cricketer Syed Kirmani turned up.
International rider Maribashetty’s enthralled the Sunday crowd with his tent-pegging display that was the highlight of the closing ceremony. As seven group of dancers from Mysore, Chamrajnagar and Mandya assembled to perform the Janapada Jathre, fireworks exploded to signal the end of the Games with the promise to meet again in Bellary and Raichur next year.
Swimmer Rehan Poncha, who won 12 gold, five silver and two bronze, was adjudged the best sportsperson of the meet. Gold medal winners in individual events will be richer by Rs 5000, while silver medalists will get Rs 3000 and bronze medalists Rs 2000. The corresponding figures in the team events are 3000, 2000 and 1000.
