DH News Service, Mangalore:
Manipal Heart Institute and the Departments of medicine at KMC Hospital in Attavar and Ambedkar Circle are jointly conducting a workshop on 'Cardiology and radial intervention' at Hotel Goldfinch on February 2.

Speaking to media persons here on Thursday, Senior Cardiologist of KMC Dr Yusuf Kumble informed that purpose of the workshop is to pass the message that the block in blood vessels can be removed in a very simple manner with an outpatient procedure.

The workshop, first of its kind in South India, will be attended by cardiologists from all the four southern states and there will be a live demonstration of Angioplasty the hospital in Ambedkar circle, which will be telecasted live at Hotel Goldfinch, for the participants of the workshop. A fibre optic cable will be laid between the hospital and the hotel for this purpose.

The workshop will be inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner M Maheshwar Rao. This will be followed by the demonstration and a series of panel discussions. There will also be guests lectures by eminent cardiologists in Karnataka.

Dr Kumble said that the aim of the workshop is to educate upcoming doctors on the procedure. As many as six angioplasty surgeries, costing Rs 35,000 each, will be conducted free of cost on the day, he informed. However, the hospital is trying to see if the cost can be reduced, COO Dr Sunil Deshpande said.

Dr Kumble said that there will be nearly zero percent complication for this sort of angioplasty, and it is very convenient for the patient as he can go home on the same day.
