Film screening
Subrahmanyan Viswanath

Turning celluloid arclight on universal theme of human rights to educate common diaspora about its various ramifications, Breakthrough, an international human rights organisation, in association with Alliance Francaise de Bangalore and Bangalore Film Society, is showcasing a collection of 22 acclaimed films from across three continents which chronicle the struggles and victories of humans in their fight against oppressive system and restoration of their basic rights.

From images of water, triumph, poverty, exploitation, voices from margins, these films “bring to the fore untold stories from the past, depth of memory in varied forms and myriad ways, educating, enlightening while informing and seeking answers to various issues they deal with.’’ The festival, in its fourth edition, explores the struggles of people for social equality, life and dignity in three continents — Asia, Latin America and Africa.

Styled under ubiquitous banner of Tri-Continental Film Festival 2008, the three-day Human Rights in Frames celluloid explorations, begins on Friday and is on till Sunday.

On Friday, the day long screenings will be kicked off at 1.30 pm with El Charango, a short Spanish language documentary exploring the relationship between Bolivian stringed instrument — charango and Cerro Rico (Rich Mountain). The story of charango symbolises the struggle for human rights and the quest to keep traditional culture alive among indigenous people.

It focuses on several charango players including most renowned charango player in the world today, Ernesto Cavour Ayamaro.

On Saturday and Sunday screenings will begin at 11 am.

Admission is free. For details call 25493 705 / 25492 774 / 9886213516.
