Two memorials from the 5th / 6th century AD have come to light at Yennegere and Bittasandra, in Magadi taluk of the newly-formed Ramanagara taluk.
Resembling a temple, the structure at Yennegere has no entry point. But there is an opening to the West, 67 cm tall and 36 cm wide. This opening is closed with an oblong piece of 13 cm. length, made out of the same stone. According to Dr. H.S. Gopala Rao from Nelamangala taluk, the structure was not really a temple, but it was apparently reminded one of the “dolmen” from the megalithic period.
The structure stands on a two-levelled platform of 31 cm height. “On the platform, a box-like structure of four slabs, each of 118 cm breadth and 110 cm height, is constructed. Over that is a tower in Dravidian style, which is 119 cm in height,” observes Dr Rao.
At Bittasandra, a few km from Yennegere, was found a slab with engravings on Panchaksharaiah. “The engraving is a line drawing of a few dancers, dancing in front of a fire which looks like a homa kunda. This reminds one of a vedic practice.”
