The Manipal University is constructing a modern sports complex at Kaprigudda in Mangalore.
Speaking to media persons here on Monday, Kasturba Medical Colleges in Mangalore Dean Dr C V Raghuveer informed that the foundation stone laying ceremony of the complex will be held on February 13 at 10.30 am.
Renowned Cricketer Javagal Srinath will be the chief guest on the occasion and he will be honoured in a function organised soon after the ceremony at Dr T M A Pai International Convention Centre.
The indoor sports complex will include a basket ball court with a gallery, 2 squash courts, 3 table tennis courts and facilities for body massage, Sauna bath, steam bath and so on. There will also be a multi gym and cafeteria in the first floor. Adequate facilities for toilets, changing rooms and bath rooms will also be provided. The sports complex will also contain provision for outdoor sports like volley ball and hockey and a 200 metre long athletics track.
The complex, that is estimated to cost over Rs 10 crore will be completed by coming December. It is coming up in a 4.5 acre land near the Men’s Hostel and KMC Hospital in Attavar. It will benefit more than 3,000 students studying in KMC, Manipal College of Dental Sciences (MCODS) and Manipal College of Nursing Sciences (MCONS).
To a query, Dr Raghuveer said that the facility will not be accessible to general public as for now, but will be available to organisations interested in conducting tournaments, on request.
KMC Associate Dean Dr Venkat Rai expected that the sports complex will inturn help in the evolution of a sports medicine department in KMC.
MCODS Dean Dr Surendra Shetty, Associate Dean Dr Dilip Nayak, MCONS DEan Dr Juliana D’Sa, KMC Associate Dean Dr Ananda Kini and others were present in the press meet.
