A team of IT companies from Bangalore has developed a software which will automatically spot duplication of names and identify bogus names in the voters’ list, State Electoral Officer R Ramsheshan said.
He, however, did not divulge the names of IT companies that have developed the software free of cost for the Commission.

Due to lack of a proper system to avoid invalid names getting into the voters’ list, the Commission is presently working overtime spending huge amount of tax-payers’ money, trying to weed them out. So far, around 50 lakh invalid names have been removed from the voters’ list.

Once this software is adopted, the entire problem can be solved. But it will be done only after the elections in the State. “Presently, preparations are on for the elections. So introduction of a new system is difficult,” Ramsheshan said.

The working of the software was demonstrated recently before the Chief Election Commissioner and other officers. The CEC has already given it in-principle approval.

The decision has been taken to first implement it in Krishnagiri district in Tamil Nadu, on an experimental basis.
Based on the performance in Krishnagiri, it will be extended to other parts of the country.
