The High Court on Thursday ordered issue of notices to State government and State Election Commission (SEC) on a petition seeking a writ of mandamus to them to hold elections to Bangalore Bruhat Mahanagara Palike or Yelahanka City Municipal Council, immediately.
The petitioner, former Yelahanka CMC president Y N Ashwath, said though the term of previous elected body of CMC expired more than a year ago, the government and SEC had still not held elections.
A notification was issued to form BBMP including Yelahanka CMC among a few other CMCs on January 16 last, but elections have not been held for either the BBMP or the CMC. He said the constitutional obligation of holding elections for a local body before expiry of the tenure of existing members, was grossly violated.
Justice Ashok B Hinchigeri ordered issue of notices to the government and SEC.
