The trend of Kannadigas forgetting Kannada culture by imbibing western culture among themselves is a big tragedy, said Kendra Sahitya Academy award winner Kum Veerabhadrappa.
Speaking after receiving the honour conferred on him during the inauguration of Bhasha Balaga at IDSG College here on Wednesday, he said proverbs and riddles were disappearing from the colloquial language. If this continues, how to develop Kannada? he queried.
The decline in the reading habit among people is just a symbol of the decay of Kannada language. Kannada is facing a crucial situation. Lapses in pronunciation of certain letters themselves are the primary features of the decay of Kannada language, he apprehended.
Rural people used to add new energy to the language by their simple quarrels. They were giving new musical concepts by weeping during the funerals. But everything is on the verge of decay due to globalisation, Mr Veerabhadrappa observed.
Declining relations
It is a tragedy of the society that the relationship between father, mother and children is weakening. The fundamental sensitivity of hamlets is being died as people have started thinking that English is the ultimate solution to all problems. As different types of Kannada is being spoken in different parts of the state, Kanada is a union of various languages. But this spring has started drying in the recent days, he said.
There is a need for energising the decaying language. Preserving colloquial language is the prime duty of each poet and Kannadiga, he advised.
