Contest for CMC president post hots up
DH News Service, Tiptur:

With the election date for the post of the president to the Tiptur City Municipal Council fixed, various political parties are going all out to wrest the coveted post.

Just a week is left as February 21 has been fixed as the date. In the elections held three months back to the CMC, JD (S) legislator B Nanjamari faction which was in power had won 11 seats out of 31 and with the legislator’s vote, they were sure of 12 votes. Since they required only 4 votes to get a majority, it was making efforts to get the support of the Congress or the independents.

However, unfortunately the untimely death of Kempegowda who belonged to the ruling party led to a setback to the party. A few days after this, the government lost its power. Even the legislator’s vote was lost as a result.

Now the JD (S) members strength stands at 10. For a majority they need 16 votes now.

Many feel that G M Nataraj of the JD(S) is the ideal candidate for the president’s post as he has a clean image.

But in the race to power, will he win is the question.

Kingmakers

If the Congress with 6 members supports him, then it will have the credit of supporting the right candidate.

This depends on the decision of former legislator K Shadakshari. If he says yes, then Nataraj has every  possibility of becoming the president.

The BJP with its member supporters has 10 seats. R D Babu and M P Prasannakumar are the president post’s aspirants. Hence there is no doubt that along with 10 members, they can get two more votes. But where will the remaining votes come from is the question.

Amongst the four independents T S Srinivas has tilted towards the Congress. What the remaining three will do is something one has to wait and watch.

The other aspirants include Congress’s Bagepalli Nataraj, Srinivas, Independent member Prakash and JD(S)’s Goragondanahalli G B Rajashekar.

All are dreaming of the president’s post. To bag the post, already political games have begun.

The people however, are hoping that the right candidate is chosen as the president to the CMC which has crores of rupees revenue.
