Troubled Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt could be in for another rough patch, this time over the registration of his marriage in Goa and the hurriedly acquired Margao residency certificate for his wife Manyata Dilnasheen Amir Ahmed Sheikh.
The state administration will now be compelled to look into the validity of the marriage registration, lawyers here said. South Goa Collector G P Naik suspended a local Thalati Prashant Kunkolienkar on Thursday for helping Manyata acquire a residency certificate in Margao under a false declaration.
Manyata is alleged to have acquired the certificate within a day of applying for it on February 6 by declaring she had lived at Aquem Alto, Margao for six months.
The Dutts registered their marriage before a sub-registrar in a five-star hotel in South Goa on February 7.
“There is prima facie evidence that the Thalati provided the certificate by accepting forged documents,” Naik told Deccan Herald. He said the sub-registrar would be required to look into the validity of the marriage registration because of the false residency certificate.
Officials here said either one of the partners intending to get married has to be a resident of the area for a minimum of six months before they can approach the registrar's office to register a marriage in Goa. The marriage is actually registered after 15 days of filing of declaration of marriage before the sub-registrar, which is the period for raising objections.
Goa has some of the strictest laws governing the registration of births and marriages and was at one point considering mandatory HIV testing for couples registering to get married.
