Ashutosh Gowariker’s magnum opus Jodhaa Akbar will not be released in Rajasthan theatres from Friday. The cinema hall owners have decided not to screen the movie in the wake of threats and possible violence by Rajput outfits opposing the release of the movie.
Though the Rajasthan High Court on Wednesday asked the state government to ensure law and order to facilitate release of the movie in Rajasthan, the cinema hall owners took the decision not to take the risk.
Rajput Karni Sena and some other Rajput outfits have been opposing the movie for a long time holding Gowariker responsible for the distortion of historical facts in the movie.
The Karni Sena chief Lokendra Singh Kalvi had demanded a ban on the film and an unconditional apology from the director for misrepresentation and social devaluation of Rajputs.
The Sena has been asserting that Jodhaa was Mughal emperor Akbar’s daughter-in-law not his wife.
Though Messrs. Ashutosh Gowariker Productions issued a clarification citing all the scholarly references consulted before making the movie and that a disclaimer will also be shown in the movie, the Rajputs were not convinced.
The cinema hall owners sensing trouble by the Karni Sena activists decided not to screen the movie from Friday.
The filmgoers of Rajasthan eagerly awaiting for the movie shot in Rajasthan are highly disappointed.
This is however, not the first time that Rajput activists have threatened to stall a movie. Zubeda and Kshatriya also met initial resistance from Rajputs for alleged misrepresentation of facts.
