Intolerance, the order of the day
By Meera Seshadri
At this rate one wouldn't be surprised if there'd be a day, wherein no two persons can tolerate each other for more than a time span of five minutes!

It’s indeed bewildering to behold the burgeoning hate communities on worldwide web, which indubitably testifies to the exponential rise in human intolerance levels. We, as a human race, seem to be virtually intolerant towards everything! We’re intolerant towards other religions, communities, languages, skin colours, even towards others’ habits, behaviours/mannerisms!

Road rage is one classic case that bespeaks human intolerance. Caught in a traffic snarl recently, I happened to witness a SUV driver grappling with his steering wheel to inch ahead. A ragamuffin, who was passing by, just playfully thumped the vehicle at its side. The innocuous act infuriated the vehicle driver so much that he hopped down to deliver a resounding whack on the lad’s back. The hapless lad was hurled in kind of catatonic state, too stumped to react. Somehow, we feel its infra-dig to our image to let the bygones be bygones because of which trifling things translate into titanic issues, creating untold imbroglios on roads. Why have we grown so incredibly intolerant?

A psychologist opines, “People today have macro expectations from life. This is engendering enormous mental stress and frustrations, which ultimately is culminating in high intolerance/impatience levels in them. The hoary phrase “give respect, take respect” seems to have faded into oblivion. Since today, we neither give respect, nor care two hoots about getting it”.

Brutal carnages and pogroms to eliminate rival groups are yet more proofs for this human intolerance that’s spreading its tentacles in all directions. Interestingly, this kind of savage slaughtering of own species is seldom seen in animals, as we extensively see among homo sapiens!

Talking of intolerance, at times I hear of MNC honchos’ inimical and intolerant attitude towards their employees — the manner they denigrate their employees’ work, despite the latter working like Trojans.

And, I hear from my friends, settled in the country’s northern parts, about intolerance shown towards souhies by some folks out there. (Quite surprising, considering the fact that be it beauties or brains, we’ve them in boundless amount here down south!) After hearing these, it doesn’t stagger one any more to hear of cruel treatment meted out to animals by few intolerant humans.

Well, looks like this all-pervading intolerance culture seems to have impinged upon young minds too. The grisly gunning down of a young chap recently by his classmate clearly indicates the veracity in the above premise. At this rate, one wouldn’t be surprised if there’d be a day, wherein no two persons can tolerate each other for more than a time span of five minutes! Does it mean the end of human binding n’ bonding? Perhaps a jot of consideration, empathy and tolerance can salvage the situation!
