Give land rights to farmers: JD(S)
DH News Service, Bangalore:

The JD(S) on Thursday urged the Governor to give back the ownership of bane and jumma bane lands in Kodagu district to the farmers.

Talking to media in Bangalore, party spokesperson Y S V Datta said though the previous government led by H D Kumaraswamy had restored the ownership to the farmers, the officials have not been issuing the land rights.
As a result, farmers have not been able to take loans from banks, he added.

A committee has been constituted to look into the issue in July 2007. But so far the committee has not submitted any report.

“Hundreds of farmers are in a fix as they are rendered jobless without their land. The Governor must intervene and restore their ownership. Besides, the Governor should also freeze the functioning of the committee till a popular government comes into existence,” he demanded.

WHile sops are offered to grant rights to farmers of the land tilled by them, nobody bothers as to what happened to the lands alrady granted under the Landreforms Act. lands taken from poor landlords and widows, have been converted intonon agriculturaul lands and sold for a hefty price. Why not assure to pass legislation to nullify all these tansfers and give same to the landless or deserving tillers of soil. THere are political leaders owning such lands now. WIll they give up such lands
