A Valentine’s day gift?
Sir, The relaxation of the marriageable age, as recommended by the law commission, is an enigma to parents. The boys should marry at the age of 18 and the girl at 16? The recommendation of the commission is unjust and unfair.
Teenage students in love may now register their marriages without the consent of the parents. It may lead to illicit pregnancies and abortions. Many may withdraw from college without fulfiling their ambitions.
It is well known that the population explosion in our country is unprecedented. Where is the need for early marriages? The Government should understand that there are major setbacks in our economic distribution. India stands the second largest populated country in the world. Do we want relaxation of marriage Act? Does our developing country need this? It is absurd to have such a negative approach towards our economic progress.

Need for Hubli Express
Sir, There is a need to introduce a superfast, overnight train between Hubli and Bangalore. The present Rani Chenamma Express starts from Kolhapur, and after undergoing a 9-hour journey, reaches Hubli. It often runs late and has limited quota for Hubli. As its arrives in Bangalore at around 7.30 am, and since it usually runs late, passengers often miss their connecting trains. Hopefully a new train between Bangalore and Hubli is introduced in the up coming rail budget.

Wildlife protection
Sir, I was shocked and moved to tears, when I saw the photograph of elephants lying near the railway tracks in Kerala, after being hit by a moving train. Of late, these accidents have become frequent as the forest cover is fast depleting and elephants are forced to move out of their natural habitat. Besides, farmers near forests construct electric fences around their fields which kill scores of elephants as well.
It is time the railways and forest department co-ordinate their activities in such a way that such accidents do not occur in future. Wildlife protection is as important and necessary as the protection of forests and maintenance of railways.

Five days a week
Sir, It is a good news that government offices will work 5 days a week. We all know that it is not the number of hours employees work that counts, but the sincerity, honesty and involvement they put in their work. We wish all government employees work for the progress of the nation and for the tax payers, from whom their salaries and perks are generated, while working for five days a week.

Ban smoking
Sir, Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan’s statement justifying smoking on the screen under a creative liberty concept, albeit the Supreme Court ruling, made very sad reading. The universally acclaimed actor could have set an ethical precedent and helped restore pubic confidence in the Indian Judiciary, by showing that he was not above the law. Mr. Khan’s intransigent concept of creative liberty does not corroborate with any dogmatism of Jurisprudence or Constitution.
The Supreme Court ruling of imposing reasonable restriction on Public smoking is a sound interpretation of Article 21 of the constitution, because there is no reason to compel non-smokers to be helpless passive smokers. It is rather unfortunate that the Supreme Court ruling, appears to have been kept in cold storage by the various state governments, for the reason best known to them. Is this not a mockery of the Supreme Court?
