Music competition
Vibrations’ will hold Swarm Yatra-08, an annual inter-collegiate music competition for South Bangalore, from 10 am on February 16. The finals will be held at 6 pm. What makes Swarm Yatra-08 different is its format. It is not the usual run-of-the-mill light music competition. The three categories are - Round one, called ‘Kannada Bhava Geethe’, which aims to encourage knowledge of Kannada language and music amongst the youth; round 2 comprises Hindi film hits (Karaoke).
Participants will have to sing along with complete music track and lyrics projected on a TV screen. Round three is Innovative Radel Music Round. Radel, the pioneers in the field of electronic musical instruments, have a varied range of electronic musical instruments. It is a challenging test for the participants to use these instruments in innovative ways, either solo or group.
First prize is Rs 5,000 and second prize Rs 3,000 in each category. The entry fee is Rs 100 per category. Costume workshop
In co-ordination with Department of Culture and Sri Saraswati Vidyamandira, H Manjunatha will be organising a Yakshagana make-up and costume workshop namely ‘Veshabhushana’ at the auditorium of the Sri Saraswathi Vidyamandira, Vanivilasa Road from February 16 to February 23.
G S Sharma, president of the Karnataka Unaided Schools Management Association will inaugurate the workshop. Introduction about Yakshagana make-up and costume, theatre make-up skills and how a common person or artiste becomes a character on the stage because of the make-up form the focus of the workshop. Yakshagana and theatre experts Krishnamurthy Thunga, Radhakrishna Urala, Sudarshana Urala, Ramakrishna Belthur, Chidananda Kulkarni are the resource persons of the workshop and will train the participants in different aspects of Yakshagana, theatre make-up and costume.

Sangeet sammelan
The ITC Sangeet Research Academy is organising the fourth ITC Sangeet Sammelan in the City on February 16 and 17. The two-day Sangeet Sammelan, which is being held in Chowdiah Hall, Bangalore, will present ITC SRA gurus Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty and Pandit Buddhadev Das Gupta on day one, and ITC SRA Scholars Manali Bose and Joyeeta Sanyal followed by Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma on day two.
The two-day event is open to all ‘Sangeet Rasikas’ and begins at 6 pm on day one and at 5.30 pm on day two. Set up by ITC LTD as a Public Charitable Trust in 1978 to preserve and propagate Hindustani Classical Music, ITCSRA is a pioneering initiative epitomising corporate patronage of Indian classical music.
The Academy is a unique example of the traditional Indian system of teaching through the Guru Shishya Parampara, in which the disciple lives with, and learns from the Guru.
The present gurus are: Ustad Abdul Rashid Khan, Malabika Kanan, Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty, Pandit Ulhas Kashalkar, Pandit Arun Bhaduri, Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan and the living legend Vidushi Girija Devi. Pandit Buddhadev Dasgupta (sarod) and Pandit Manilal Nag (sitar) are the gurus for the instrumental section of the Academy. The Academy is headed by Pandit Vidyadhar Vyas, renowned musician and musicologist.
Saree collection
An exhibition-cum-sale called Pragathi Collection by Manjula from Anekal is on till February 17 at RMS and MMS Union Hall, 849/4, ‘A’ Block, near Canara Bank, Opp Saha restaurant, Sahakar Nagar.
The exhibition will display pure and art silk sarees which has come directly from weavers, silk cotton sarees from Chennai, exclusive varities of fancy and designer wear dress materials, vegetable-dyed hand-block printed sarees and dress materials from Jaipur, wide range of polycot sarees from Hubli and Dharwad, pure cotton sarees of different prints, designer kurtis. Carpet exhibition
A carpet exhibition is being held at the Central Cottage Industries Emporium (CCIE), MG Road till February 17. CCIE has put together a collection of exquisite carpets from all over the country. While the exhibits differ in material and pattern, each of them speaks of the culture, tradition, creativity and craft of the region of their origin. The CCIE is a repository of Indian handicrafts and handloom, art and craft. It was established to preserve and nurture the rich heritage of a culture dating back to over 5000 years in which skilled handlooms are sourced from all over the country from dedicated artisans. On display are authentic Kashmiri and Persian carpets in silk on silk and silk on cotton, the Kum design of Afghanistan, Jaipur carpets in Oriental and Bukhara style done with pure merino wool from New Zealand as well as dhurries from Agra and Andhra Pradesh.
