Preeja Sreedharan won the gold in women’s 3000M race as India grabbed six medals on day two of the third Asian Indoor Athletics Championships here on Friday.
Preeja won the yellow metal with a championship record of 9:12.26 seconds and compatriot Kavita Raut made it a one-two with a timing of 9:26.01s while Bahrain’s Yaqoob Sara Bakheet was third in 9:40.47s.
Chatholi Hamza clocked 3:41.18s to bag the silver in the men’s 1500M behind Thamer Ali (3:40.86s) of Qatar. Kamal Abubaker (3:42.50s), also of Qatar, won the bronze.
Amarjeet Singh finished second in the men’s triple jump by leaping to 16.26M. The gold was won by Roman Valiyev (16.32M) of Kazakhstan while Philakong Theerayut (16.04M) of Thailand took the bronze.
In women’s 400M race, Mandeep Kaur clocked 54.28 seconds for the bronze. Ruqaya Al Ghasara of Bahrain, the winner of the 60M gold on the opening day, won the gold in 53.28s while Mastyonko Marina of Kazakhstan was third in 53.38s. Leelavathi V added another bronze to India’s kitty from women’s 60M hurdles, timing in 9.21 seconds.
On Thursday, Sinimol Paulose had won the first gold medal for the country in the women’s 1500M with a championship record of 4:15.42. She erased the old record of 4:18.29s which she set in the last edition in Bangkok. Sinimol also qualified for the World indoor championships in Valencia next month ducking under the standard of 4:16.00s. Sinimol’s compatriot Sushma Devi won the silver in 4:22.78.
Both men’s and women’s 60M races produced championship records. Favourite Samuel Francis of Qatar (6.62s) won the men’s race while Ruqaya won the women’s event in 7.40s.
