A section of Muslim religious scholars, intellectuals and representatives of various social welfare associations on Friday passed a resolution suggesting the dissolution of the Karnataka Haj Committee.
Around 500 people participated in the meeting in the City to deliberate on the alleged mismanagement of the State Haj Committee.
“We demanded that an administrator be appointed to look after the administration of the Haj Committee and that the CoD should probe into the mismanagement by it,” said Syed Masood Ahmed Ghazanfar, editor, ‘Minority Times.’
“Karnataka has an annual quota of 6,000 Haj pilgrims. The Committee last year arbitrarily picked up people for the Haj despite the khurra (lottery), which was drawn because a large number of people had applied for the pilgrimage,” he added.
The participants charged the Committee for changing the list of selected pilgrims to “accommodate” those persons, who had not even applied for the pilgrimage. They also decided to seek information on the functioning of the Committee and their selection of pilgrims last year under the RTI Act.
