Conmen ‘polish off’ gold

Two persons, on the pretext of polishing jewellery, made away with gold valuables worth Rs 1.2 lakh from a house in Upparpet. The duo entered the house of Satyanarayana, a fish merchant, and convinced his wife Shanthamma and daughter Geetha they were experts at polishing jewellery.

After polishing some utensils and silverware, they lay their hands on gold jewellery, which included some gold chains and bangles.

Later, they put the jewellery into a pressure cooker, poured chemicals and began heating it. After asking the women to open the cooker after an hour, the two asked them for some drinking water. While they went inside to fetch it, they escaped with the valuables.

NICE guard run over

A NICE security guard was run over by a lorry on the Mysore Road-NICE Road junction on Friday. Another guard sustained serious injuries. While Guruprasad (21) died on way to the hospital, Manjunath (31) sustained serious injuries.

Man held for music piracy

The CCB police arrested a man on charges of copyright violation and seized pirated MP3 songs, DVDs and obscene films. Madappa alias Madan Kumar (25) was caught while he was illegally downloading MP3 songs belonging to Indian Music Industries at his TP Lane shop.

24 held for gambling

The CCB teams arrested 24 persons on gambling charges. They raided a house at Cubbonpet and caught 16 persons for gambling. A sum of Rs 2.16 lakh was recovered from them. In another raid in Gandhinagar, eight persons were arrested and Rs 51,010 seized.
