Answering a query on whether India could see an ipod for global market, Mr Premji categorically stated “it will not happen in the near term,” unless quality of infrastracture for local manufacturing and logistics (road) sees dramatic improvement. Stating unless one is a serious global player with matching design ability, Mr Premji said, quick obsolence, lack of necessary high level design inputs will not make it cost effective for Indian companies to compete in the global arena.
Earlier, delivering his keynote at the two-day 3rd Edition of Indian Semiconductor Association Vision Summit on Evolving Domestic Market: Growth Driver for the Indian Electronic Industry, Mr Premji posited three point strategy to propel Indian product manufacturing programme.
Support adoption
Exhorting Indian companies to go for increased localisation of products to suit domestic consumer needs, he said it was imperative to support adoption by end-users by actively engaging them right from design stage itself.
Companies must go for right user interface and support the adoption by the users by working on right products and solutions, he added. Stating innovation was key pillars of success, he observed, companies must encourage technological and managerial innovation, necessary space provided for innovation to grow and entrepreneutrial spirit recognised and encouraged.
For this, Mr Premji said, collaboration and co-innovation must be the mantra to sustain product development and work on design alterantives to address markets within the country and Indian sub-continent.
