'Slave trade in new form'
DH News Service, Bagepalli:

Fairs of cattle, vegetables, fruits and flowers is a common affair. However, what happens here in Bagepalli city is the fair of coolies, reminiscent of the slavery period.

However, everyday coolies hold jathas at the Dr H N Circle in Bagepalli city. The daily wages of the coolies here is  decided on the basis of their  bodily strength.

Both the buyers and those who are willing to sell their bodily strength  arrive at the same spot. A competition is also held wherein only those who have a strong physique emerge victorious. The remaining  earn less wages and the rest have to return home empty handed.

Coolies from several villages by boarding  maxi cabs and other modes of transportation get down at the Dr H N Circle every morning.

Even when the whole world is asleep the coolies arrive at the break of the dawn to sell themselves in the fair.

Herded like  cattle
Thus, these coolies are dependent on the jeeps and maxi cabs for their daily sustenance. However, what is to be observed is that these modes of transportation are deadly, wherein the coolies are herded like cattle. Having thus arrived from numerous villages they stand in groups at the Circle.

Coolies with lunch boxes in their hands  a  towel on their shoulder and barefooted wait in anticipation of being hired for work.

Moreover, those requiring labourers for constructing houses, agricultural work, brick kiln work, for transporting sand and other such varied activities gather here at the fair to recruit labourers.

After a clean survey only those who look fit are hired on the basis of daily wages.

Youngsters with work experience and who are willing to take lower wages are much sought after in this fair.
After the strong labourers are hired the remaining labourers are paid nothing more than Rs 30 to 50 and are hired for smaller work. Where as those who are not even recruited for  these work have to get back home disappointed.

Thus, everyday the labour is for sale at the market. However, the money procured from selling once labour at the fair is not enough to make ends meet, this is an altogether different facet of the story of the labour.
