Album: Mothership
Artiste: Led Zeppelin
Available on: EMI
Led Zeppelin redefined rock in the seventies and for all time. Their impact extends to classic and alternative rockers alike. ‘Mothership’ is a comprehensive two-CD Led Zeppelin compilation. The 24 songs included were chosen by the surviving members of Led Zeppelin: Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones, representing all eight of the band’s studio albums — Self-titled ‘Led Zeppelin I to IV’, ‘Houses of the Holy’, ‘Physical Graffiti’, ‘Presence’ and ‘In Through the Out Door’.
The all time popular ‘Stairway to Heaven’., said to be Led Zep’s best song ever and all one among rock’s best ever song finds a place in the compilation. Also included is ‘Good Times Bad Times’ from their 1969 debut album ‘Led Zeppelin’ in which guitarist Jimmy Page passed his guitar through a Leslie speaker to create a swirling effect. Page placed microphones all over the recording studio to capture a live sound when this song was recorded.
Other songs include ‘Communication Breakdown’ (one of the few songs that Page sang a backing vocal on); ‘Kashmir’ (considered to be one of Led Zeppelin’s most successful songs). The song also includes many distinctive musical patterns of classical Moroccan, Indian, and Middle Eastern music.
Not included in the compilation is ‘The Ocean’ (from Houses of the Holy). It refers to the sea of fans seen from the stage at Led Zeppelin concerts, to whom this song was dedicated. It is one of the few Led Zeppelin songs where all four members shared the writing credit
