The Department of Archaeology and Museum has tried using satellite for excavation purpose. If this experiment succeeds, then there are plans to implement the use of satellite in other parts of the State also. Seeing the pros and cons of the plan and the economic implications the next steps will be taken. However, this new experience itself is a good step in the right direction, it is felt.
It is due to the efforts of senior scientist and ISRO chairman Dr Kasturirangan’s interest the aid of satellite is being sought. Department of Archaeology and Museum director Dr R Gopal and other high level officials have got in touch with Kasturirangan and made a proposal.
Free satellite
After taking all the details, he has promised to give the satellite for free. As a result without too much of a financial burden, the work will go on at a lower cost. With Kasturirangan himself taking a keen interest, he is going to visit Talakad shortly. Based on his guidance and directions the work will begin.
The excavation work on Ganga rulers began last year in Talakad and lots of interesting finds were found. Enthused by this find, the Archaeology and Museum department has started work in other places too. First the sand which has piled up will be shifted to a different place. After removing the weeds and other wild growth, the place will be cleaned and then the excavation work will begin.
With the help of the satellite information will be gathered regarding whatever lies buried underneath the sand.
Micro-study
All this information will be put on the computer. Later, the details will be worked out as to what is there in each region. The satellite will give details about what less in one square kilometres are and a ‘micro study’ will be done. Only then will the excavation work begin.
The use of satellite will make the excavation work easy, say the officials of the Archaeology and Musuems department.
