'Settle farmers' loans to bring down suicide rates'
DH News Service, Bangalore:
BJP national president Rajnath Singh has demanded that the Centre should settle farmers loan as one-time measure to bring down rate of farmers suicides in the country.

Addressing a press conference in Bangalore on Sunday, Singh said that in the last one year over 70,000 farmers have committed suicide in the country. Farmers’ packages announced by the Union government have failed to address the real cause of the agri sector. The Centre should call for a special session of the Parliament to discuss plight of the farmers, he demanded. He also said that the government should decide to provide farmers’ loan at the interest rate of 4 per cent throughout the country.

When the NDA handed power to UPA government in 2004 there was a stock of 20 lakh tonnes of foodgrain in the godowns. However, at present only 2 lakh tonnes of foodgrain remained. The Centre has imported wheat at a cost of Rs 1,600 per quintal against Rs 800 per quintal paid to Indian farmers. The Centre should hold an inquiry into import of wheat by a joint parliamentary committee, he said.

PM candidate
The BJP has already declared L K Advani as prime ministerial candidate for the next Parliamentary elections. The assembly elections in Gujarat, Uttaranchal and Punjab have given clear indications that the public are in favour of the BJP, he said.

“In Karnataka too the party will come to power on its own. A delegation of the BJP met the chief election commissioner and urged that the elections should be held before May 28,” he said.

Mr Rajnath Singh said that the BJP will concentrate on development of Bangalore if it comes to power.
“Our government will make efforts to take the city to the top among IT cities of the world,” he declared.
