The third national seminar on ‘Evidence based and integrated medicine for Lymphatic Filariasis, other chronic Dermatoses and HIV/AIDS’ will be held at Kasargod from February 5 to 7, said Dr K S Bose of Institute of Applied Dermatology (IAD), Kasargod.
Addressing a press meet here on Monday, he said the seminar is being organised in association with the International Lymphodema Framework, Thames Valley University, London.
Oxford Medical School, UK, Emeritus Professor Terence J Ryon, who mentored the development of the new integrated treatment for lymphatic Filariasis, will participate in the three-day deliberations of the seminar, which has the theme ‘Morbidity control of Filariasis by patient empowerment through creation of patient support peer group co-operatives’.
Dr Bose said the pioneering work of IAD, Kasargod, in the treatment of lymphatic Filariasis adopting an integrated approach involving various modes of treatment including Ayurveda and Yoga therapies and its work in motivating patients to adopt self-help techniques has already attracted international attention.
Dr Bose said lymphatic Filariasis is grouped under ‘neglected disease’ list as it affects people living in the poorest conditions. The IAD developed a self help, low cost and integrated treatment by combining Ayurveda, Yoga therapy and biomedicine on a pathophysiological basis derived from biomedicine.
The seminar will be inaugurated by Thames Valley University Journal of Lymphodema Editor Prof Christine Moffatt at Municipal Conference hall in Kasargod. The seminar will be attended by experts from UK, Holland, Bangladesh and 200 delegates from India. As many as 45 patients who were treated at the Institute of Applied Dermatology will provide demonstration on the occasion.
Thames Valley University (London) Professor of Nursing Christine Moffatt will unveil the building plan of IAD on the occasion.
