=Additional Solicitor General Gopal Subramanium submitted that the government would require 3 weeks to take a decision on the issue. On January 7, the court had given the Centre one month to file a reply to the allegations in the petition.
Advocate Pinky Anand appearing for petitioner Delhi Study Group sought a definite date from the government for filing of a reply. “The elections are fast approaching, the government should tell a date,” she said.
However, a bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan adjourned the matter till the last week of February without heeding to her requests.
If the report was implemented after its notification, Karnataka would be the first state to have assembly election with redrawn constituencies.
Quoting news reports, the petitioner said that the government had taken a major decision on the report recently. It is reported that the Union Cabinet has approved the report and it might be sent to the President for her assent. The petition filed by Delhi Study Group, an NGO, alleged that despite the Commission making its recommendations more than two years ago, the Centre had been dragging its feet on getting the Presidential assent.
On the last date of hearing Advocate Arun Jaitley appearing for a BJP leader from Rajasthan sought immediate implementation of the Commission’s recommendations so that the coming elections in various states are held in accordance with the re-defined boundaries of the constituencies.
