Vista Recovery Disk
Vista users, checkout whether the Installation disc you received is a real one!
Your Windows Vista installation disc could be without the Windows Vistas advanced system recovery options (similar to XP’s repair console).
Not having a REAL Windows Vista installation DVD could create a problem when you have a borked installation.
The Windows Vista installation media serves more than one purpose.
In addition to facilitating the installation, the REAL Windows Vista DVD has a “recovery centre” to recover your system via automated recovery.
It can search for problems and attempt to fix them automatically, roll-back to a system restore point, recover a full PC backup or access a command-line recovery console for advanced recovery purposes.
Microsoft has made a recovery disc and this contains the contents of the Windows Vista DVD’s “recovery centre”.
The Recovery disk is essentially the Windows Vista install disk but without the operating system install files.
The 120 MB Windows Vista Recovery Disc in the standard ISO format can be downloaded at http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vista-recovery-disc-download/.
You’ll need to burn this ISO image to a CD or DVD before you can use it as a bootable recovery medium. A guide on how to burn an ISO image to CD or DVD can be browsed at http://neosmart.net/wiki/display/G/Burning+ISO+Images+to+a+CD+or+DVD. This will only work on systems with Windows Vista installed
Noah
Noah is an application to bridge the separate “data islands” of your browser, email client, contact manager, file folders, schedule and RSS feeds.
You can keep hundreds of emails from all of your email accounts neatly arranged in Noah and access them in a flash.
For example, to place a new VIP into his own space, drag and drop one of his emails from Noah’s inbox.
Noah will then search all of your emails from that sender and place them in the Time Grid in the order and on the date they were sent.
The application will then monitor new emails from this sender and automatically place them on the Time Grid for you the moment they’re received.
You can Import email settings, emails and contacts from Outlook and Thunderbird plus automatic setup for Gmail, Lycos, Yahoo, Netscape, Mail.com and Tiscali email accounts.
With Noah, you would be able to find an email, a website or a business presentation that’s years old with a few clicks.
The 21655 KB Noah v1.0 for Windows XP and Vista can be downloaded at http://www.gen-9.net/Noah_V1.0/gen-9-noah-1.0-installer_final.exe
Karen’s Replicator
Karen’s Replicator can automatically backup files, directories, even entire drives.
The application copies selected files from one drive or folder to another. Source and Destination folders can reside anywhere on your network.
The options include repeated copies at intervals as short as a few minutes or as long as several months. You can also copy only files that have changed. The replication of folder and file deletions are also available in this application.
There are a couple of new features to specify which files should not be copied and also which days a file should be left out!
The application requires Visual Basic Runtime v6.0. Karen’s Replicator’s installer will automatically download and run the Visual Basic Runtime installer, if necessary. The 2,146,952 bytes Karen’s Replicator v3.5.3 can be downloaded at http://www.karenware.com/progs/ptreplicator-setup.exe
Virus Blocker
Untangle’s Virus Blocker enables administrators to block viruses at the Network gateway itself.
Zero client installations and an intuitive easy-to-use GUI make it easy to protect users from viruses threats over the web (HTTP), email (SMTP, POP and IMAP) and file transfer protocols.
The Virus Blocker can scan the network traffic for virus exploit code at the gateway and ensure that filters and signatures are always current with automatic updates.
The utility can detect viruses, worms and trojan horses and can also scan within archives and compressed files such as zip, rar, tar, gzip, bzip2, MS OLE2, MS cabinet files, MS CHM and MS SZDD. It can also protect against archive bombs and files that are repeatedly compressed. Virus blocker is based on the ClamAV engine and virus signature database. Virus Blocker is an Open Source application and free under the GPLv2. You can access the requirements details for hardware at: http://wiki.untangle.com/index.php/Hardware_Requirements and an installation guide can be found at http://www.untangle.com/pdf/Download_QuickStart.pdf
