Concern expressed over influence of English
DH News Service, Mangalore:

‘Tulu Sahithya Charithre,’ a magnum opus focusing on the different aspects of Tulu literature, history published jointly by the Dravida Study Centre of Kannada University, Hampi, and Tulu Sahithya Academy was released at St Aloysius College auditorium on Saturday.

Releasing the book, Dharmadhikari D Veerendra Heggade expressed concern over the influence of English language over the smaller languages spoken by the people and its culture.

“English language and foreign culture has influenced all walks of life. We have respect towards our culture. But not trying to preserve it. Youth should come forward to preserve the tradition and culture of Tulu.”

Administrative Reforms Commission Chairman Veerappa Moily said: “Tulu language had an important place among the Dravidian languages. But the importance of the language has been hidden in the history as the language was deprived of royal patronage. However, with the awareness of the people today, the language is spreading its fragnance throughout again,” he added.

On the influence of globalisation on local culture, Mr Moily said “Globalisation has two faces. On the one hand, it has an adverse impact on our culture and tradition. On the other, it provides an opportunity for us to grow to a greater heights. There is a need to work towards taking our rich culture to the global level.”

Litterateur Prof Amruth Someshwar said the 1,138 page book contains 101 write ups on different subjects related to Tulu Nadu. It also contains articles written by Manjeshwara Govinda Pai, Shivaram Karanth, K S Haridas Bhat, William Madtha and the research findings of scholars. Nearly 14 articles have been devoted to the Tulu history, structure of the language. Nearly 26 articles shed light on Tulu folklore and culture. There are articles which discuss the literary forms as well.

Kannada University Vice-Chancellor (in-charge) Dr Boralingaiah presided. Mangalore University Vice-Chancellor Prof K M Kaveriappa, Alva’s Foundation Chairman Dr Mohan Alva, Karnataka Theological College Principal Dr J S Sadananda among others were present.
