The Forest Department of Kundapur division will organise Mangrove Conservation Convention as part of World Wet Land Day at Jaladi Hemmadi village in Kundapur on February 6, informed Deputy Conservator of Forest (Kundapur division) Rajkumar Srivastav.
Addressing a press meet on Saturday, he said that as many as 14 species of mangroves are found only in the wet land area of Kundapur. Being the largest mangrove growing area in the coastal belt of Karnataka, it constitutes 2 sq kms of the total area of 8.7 sq kms of the mangrove growing area in the State.
He said that a Mangrove Information Centre, first of its kind in the State will be set up at Kundapur within two to three months.
The foundation stone for the centre will be laid on February 6, Mr Srivastava added.
Mangroves are considered as reserve forest under Coastal Management Zone, he pointed out.
Union Minister for Labour and Employment Oscar Fernandes, Third Finance Commission Chairman A G Kodgi, MP D C Srikantappa, former minister V S Acharya and Zilla Panchayat President Raju Poojary and other dignitories are expected to take part in the convention.
