Workshop mulls over vanishing mangroves
DH New Service, Bangalore:
The last 50 years has seen the country lose 50 per cent of its mangrove area. Pollution and oil spills, impounding of river waters, cultivation, cattle grazing, over-harvesting of the mangroves are some of the main reasons for this.

A workshop to discuss the problems and conservation of mangroves was inaugurated on Thursday in the city at the premises of the Institute of Wood Science and Technology. Recommendations that emerge from the two-day workshop will be part of inputs for strategic planning at the centre and states, said director, IWST, Suresh Gairola.

Miniscule
In Karnataka, mangroves occupy a miniscule 8.7 sq kilometers. "They are more like natural barriers to individual farmlands, and in some places to sea erosion," said R K Srivastav, DCF Kundapura. ve by planting", he added.
Sand mining and diving for seashells has made it impossible for mangroves to take root. He, however, believes it can be taken up as a measure against erosion against the costlier option of stonewalling.
