Planning to give your home a traditional makeover? What better way to start than picking up artifacts from God’s own country. If it is the essence of Kerala that you are looking to create, a visit to the Kerala Crafts Fair would come in handy.
From decorative to pooja items, the fair offers a wide variety of wood, metal, ayurveda and bamboo products.
The expo that showcases the work of 25 artisans, has on display lamps, bells and other pooja items made of bell metal. These items are priced anywhere between Rs 300 and Rs 54,000. To give your walls a royal touch, you could pick up the Aranmula mirrors. The mirrors priced a little over Rs 2,000, once adorned the palaces of Kerala.
But if you are looking for something fancy then try the ‘Muthu kuda’ or the decorative umbrella. Rosewood replicas of caparisoned elephants that add grandeur to Kerala temple festivals, are also up for sale here. The elephants that come with gold plated ornaments, are available in all sizes and make for good show pieces. Replicas of Malabar Uru, or the sailing ships that were used to transport silk and spices, and sandalwood and rosewood versions of Snake boats that are used in the Kerala boat races also make for good collector’s items. There is also a wide range of furniture, key holders, utility items and statues of Gods made of wood. There are bags made of banana fibre for the trendy. There is also the palm leaf hat, with which you can beat the heat.
Scrubs, dental powder, perfumes and honey made using ayurveda products; bamboo, mural, straw and Ravi Verma paintings, and the popular Kathakali masks are also available at the expo.
You can also pick the beautifully carved and house shaped Nettoor box or the colourful Kathakalli box, that was used by the dancers to store their jewellery and costumes, to stock up your jewellery. Traditional Kerala handloom is also available there. The expo is on at the Safina Plaza till February 17. The fair is open between 10 am and 8 pm and offers a discount of 10 per cent.
