Cast: Matthew McConaughey, Kate Hudson, Donald Sutherland, Alexis Dziena, Kevin Hart
Director: Andy Tennant
There are approximately six reasons you should watch this movie — 1. Director Andy Tennant 2. The oh-so-fantastic pair of Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson 3. The venerable Donald Sutherland 4. The tongue-in-cheek, sometimes slapstick, sometimes subtle humour 5. The beautiful legend that has been woven into the racy script 6. The action — not too fast, not too gory, just right to keep your pulse racing. If all these don’t make you want to get up and go to the theatre, then sample this: you won’t get bored even for a moment!
Granted you’ve got to keep your ears pasted to the speakers to keep track of the story, but that doesn’t matter. You’ll get updates every 5-10 minutes.
Broke treasure hunter Finn (McConaughey) is trying to repay his debt to hip-hop mogul and fellow bounty hunter Bigg Bunny (Hart), while trying to keep his wife Tess (Hudson) from divorcing him.
Just then, he stumbles on a clue that could lead to the find of the century. Only now, Finn has to get Tess’s yacht-owner boss Nigel Honeycutt (Sutherland) to lend him his boat. This he manages to do by impressing Nigel’s Paris Hilton-like young daughter Gemma (Dziena). But trouble is at hand; Bigg Bunny manages to stay one step right behind them. Now Finn has to save the treasure while saving all their lives.
If you’ve seen a dozen or so treasure-hunt movies till now, wrap all those memories up and throw them in the bin.
Fool’s Gold is different; director Andy Tennant has managed to keep the movie from becoming too mystical and flimsy. Although talk of the Spanish galleons, the Queen’s dowry, honour and sunken treasure — spoken almost magically by McConaughey — will transport you to another world, Tennant manages to keep his characters in the real world.
In fact, he even takes time to show the development of each character in this motley bunch — be it the naive Gemma who keeps prancing around the boat in bikinis, her old but accommodating father Nigel, the confused Tess who can’t decide whether she wants to let go of her husband, the eternally hopeful Finn who keeps getting hit on the head but miraculously gets up and moves on with a never-say-die attitude. Kudos goes to Kevin Hart, who plays the bling-sporting hot-headed rapper to a T.
Nothing can relax you better than watching a no-frills fun movie. Fool’s Gold is a must-see.
