A sum of Rs 4 lakh was looted in broad daylight from the Canara Bank main branch here on Wednesday. However, the thieves were nabbed later.
According to the bank’s senior manager, a man entered the bank at about 10.30 am, when the bank was full of customers. When the cashier in-charge was busy, the man entered the cash cabin from behind and laid his hands on the cash box, grabbing a wad of currency notes. The man took the cash (amounting to Rs 4 lakh), and left the place. The cashier, who felt somebody’s presence, raised an alarm, but by then the thief had disappeared.
Sources said that the cash box contained Rs 17 lakh in all.
The police were informed half an hour after the incident. Additional SP DC Rajappa rushed to the spot with his team, and made some inquiries, and a case was registered.
Robbers caught
The robbers were caught with the stolen cash near Gadiganur within an hour of the incident. Police had immediately alerted all police stations about the incident, instructing them to check all vehicles passing on highways and roads leading from the city. A trax passing near Gadiganur was stopped, and three people were nabbed - along with the stolen money.
The names of the three robbers are not known, but sources say that they are from Tamil Nadu.
