In an interaction with the Third Finance Commission members here on Thursday, they said the Act is too old and it needs to be amended to suit today’s needs.
Citing an example, MCC Commissioner Krishnappa Poojary said there are six medical colleges in the City. However, we can not collect taxes, because they come under Charitable institutions.
The Commission Member T Thimme Gowda said that the Commission can send a proposal for the Amendment.
Solid waste mgt
To a query on solid waste management, DC M Maheshwar Rao said that land has been purcahsed for solid waste management in every taluks.
Every taluk has outsourced the solid waste management.
Water
Mr Gowda said that standardised rates can be charged from household for the public taps. Water supply management is very essential issue, he added.
He said user charges can be a good source of income for the urban local bodies as well as City Corporation.
Mr Poojary said there are no declared slum areas in Mangalore City Corporation limits.
