DH News Service,Chikmagalur:

The crime rate in the district has reduced drastically during 2007 when compared to last two years. In 2006 a total of 4,990 cases were filed as against 3,535 cases in 2007, informed Superintendent of Police Vipul Kumar.
Addressing a news conference, he informed that there has been a sharp reduction in the number of murder, assault, atrocities on women, atrocities on SC/STs and riot cases in the district. About 35 murder cases were filed in 2005, 40 in 2006 and 33 cases in 2007, of which 17 cases are under investigation.
About 97,112 and 110 fatal accidents took place during 2005, 06 and 07 respectively, while atrocities on women dwindled from 16 in 2005 to 17 in 2006 to 11 in 2007. Atrocities on SC/STs too reduced from 49, 71 to 32 cases respectively.  There were 140 missing cases in 2005, 206 in 2006 and 157 cases in 2007 of whom 130 persons in 2005, 165 persons in 2006 and 100 persons in 2007 were traced out.
SP said that no major communal riots took place in the district barring a small commotion that broke out between the Hindus and the Christians at Kalludoddi. He thanked the citizens for having made scope for the peaceful completion of Datta Jayanthi and Datta Mala celebrations and added that the crime investigation is over 60 per cent in the district.
He said that all steps have been taken to see to that the police win the confidence of the people and accordingly every constable from each Police Station is made to visit villages four times a month and collect details about the people’s problems, which will be solved during the public meets.
