Congress leaders of the taluk have severely criticised the statement of BJP leader Sureshgowda that the mass marriage held in Kunigal recently was ‘just to please minorities.’
Speaking at a press meet on Thursday Congress leader Rehman Sheriff and former president of lawyers’ association Mumtaz Ahmed said that the free mass marriage organised by Subraihmanya social welfare committee, in which 42 couples tied the nuptial knot, was not to seek any mileage or to woo any community.
It is not for the first time that the S P Muddahanumegowda and M K Ashok of Subraihmanya social welfare committee have organised a mass marriage. Prior to this they had conducted mass marriage of 204 couples, belonging to different communities. Even in the future they have planned to hold wedding of 501 couples, said the Congress leaders.
“BJP leader Suresh, who could not stand the success of the mass marriage has given such statements,” they said.
Benevolent act
Apart from free mass marriages, the Subraihmanya social welfare committee has engaged in various benevolent acts such as conducting free tailoring classes, health camps and distributing free notebooks to students.
“BJP leaders are accusing that mass marriage was held to please minorities,. Why then did they take thousands of people to Jog trip in hundreds of buses free of cost just before Kunigal municipal council elections? Was is not to woo them for their votes?” asked the Congress leaders.
They added that instead of resorting to such cheap measures, if any party organises genuine programmes for the welfare of the community, Muslims will certainly appreciate and cooperate.
