Sania Mirza has been seeded 31 in the first Grand Slam of the year
India’s number one women tennis player Sania Mirza has been seeded 31 in the first Grand Slam of the year — the Australian Open — beginning on January 14 in Melbourne.
Sania has been seeded according to her position in the WTA ranking charts.
Being seeded would help Sania avoid facing stronger opponents in the opening few rounds. World number one Belgian Justin Henin has been given the top billing while defending champion American Serena Williams is seeded seventh.
There were few surprises in Thursday's list, which was based on the world rankings with Roger Federer seeded top in the men’s list.
Spain's Rafael Nadal, Serbia's Novak Djokovic, Russia's Nikolay Davedenko and Spain's David Ferrer round out the top five in the men's draw.
Belgian Henin is followed by Russia's Svetlana Kuznetsova, Serbian pairing Jelena Jankovic and Ana Ivanovic while Russia's Maria Sharapova is ranked fifth.
Women's champion Serena Williams has been seeded seventh, one place ahead of her sister Venus, who won last year's Wimbledon.
