Expressing hope that elections to the State Assembly would be held before the end of six month President’s rule on May 28, Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami on Thursday dropped hints that delimitation process would not be made applicable to the coming assembly elections.
Speaking to reporters here, Mr Gopalaswami said the Election Commission would require at least six months for holding elections as per the new delimitation Act. However, he did not like to speculate on the date of notification of the delimitation Act.
“I can’t guess whether delimitation act would be notified. It’s some other authority which looks after the matter,” he remarked.
The CEC declined to state the date on which elections would be held to the state assembly.
“I myself don’t know the date; but the last date for end of six months President’s rule is May 28. I hope that the elections would be held before May 28.”
‘Rectify list’
Meanwhile, the KPCC urged the Chief Election Commissioner to take steps to rectify the defective electoral rolls and provide a clean electoral list.
In a memorandum to the CEC at Vidhana Soudha here, KPCC President Mallikarjuna Kharge said the officials have not strictly adhered to the provisions of Act 1950 and Rules 1960 in the revision of electoral rolls.
Consequently, the electoral rolls of the 224 assembly constituencies are defective and inconclusive.
The memorandum says in some constituencies such as Humnabad and Tumkur city, the total number of voters exceed the total population.
In areas such as Pavagada, names of voters in the neighbouring states have been included. “In Bijapur, Bagalkot, Gadag, Dharwad, Belgaum, Mandya and Davanagere, 60,000 to 1.25 lakh voters have been unlawfully registered,” it says.
