In the coming days, Karnataka police will have a huge responsibility of ensuring that elections are conducted peacefully, Governor Rameshwar Thakur said on Thursday.
Inaugurating the three-day senior police officers’ conference here, Mr Thakur showered praise on the department. “Thanks to the Karnataka police department for wrapping up the year peacefully without firing a single bullet. This goes to show that the police have discharged their duty to a great extent.
Traffic congestion was the focus of discussions during many interactions with the foreign delegates.
Vatsala Watsa, principal secretary, home department, spoke about a series of ideas which could be discussed at the conference - statutory changes for the welfare of the department; working hours, conditions, cash compensation, in-service training, outsourcing (serving summons, escort duties, etc), tenure of police officers and improvement of basic facilities at the police stations.
Meanwhile, DG & IGP K R Sreenivasan, in his welcome address, appraised officers on law and order, crime, traffic, naxal, issues and how the department had performed.
Karnataka, besides utilising the Central funds (Rs 500 crore), has given a supplementary estimation for further modernisation, he said.
