Bangalore, no doubt, is a beautiful city. However, the burgeoning population which is not matched with adequate infrastructure, is also making life in the City tough. Urban planners do have the big ideas to make the City a better place. These are some of the plans, if not resolutions, of the heads of various public utilities to make 2008 a great year.
The Bangalore Development Authority is set to complete all its pending projects by the early part of 2008. Apart from this, we have lined up five new residential layouts in different parts of Bangalore. These projects will define the BDA’s roadmap for the year 2008.
— M K Shankaralinge Gowda,
Commissioner, BDA
We would like to dedicate 2008 as the year of Commuter Satisfaction. BMTC has introduced a slew of measures/initiatives to give the citizens an affordable, comfortable & safe mode of public transport. BMTC will go public and offer the commuter a chance to own a share in the corporation by investing in the IPO. Our vision is to introduce world-class connectivity to the upcoming international airport in Devanahalli through Volvo buses plying on a dedicated bus lane. A network of TTMCs (Traffic and Transit Management Centres) and the ‘Suvarna’ peak hour service are on the cards.
— Upendra Tripathy,
Managing Director, BMTC
In the new year, I hope for active community participation in the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) projects in Bangalore. Besides, I wish the State Government will enact the much-needed community participation law soon and set up area sabhas. Community participation is the key for the success of JNNURM. Bangaloreans should be involved in the City Development Plan under the Mission.
— Ramesh Ramanathan,
National Technical Advisor, JNNURM
BBMP’s priorities in the new year will be improving the road network and taking steps for easy flow of traffic. After heavy rains in the months of September and October, many roads have pot-holes and in turn, are affecting traffic. The sad thing about 2007 is that the City witnessed a large extent of damage due to heavy rains. I hope there will be no repetition of the same in the new year.
— Dr S Subramanya,
Commissioner, BBMP
A speedy implementation of Namma Metro will be my top priority in the new year. I hope BMRC will get support from every stakeholder, especially motorists, in implementing the project. The year 2008 will see intense activities. Support of all the stakeholders is a must to achieve the goal.
— V Madhu,
Managing Director, BMRCL
The plan for 2008 is firstly to remove the encroachments from the forest land in Bangalore. We want to consolidate this land and create wood lots which will be able to fix the carbon dioxide from various sources and mitigate the green house effect. We also want to make the lakes in the City more habitable and create more amenities for the public as well as mark some lakes for migratory and local birds.
— U V Singh, Chief Conservator of Forests, Bangalore Circle
In the new year, we plan to strengthen the water conservation measures. We want to be able to cover the newly-added areas to BBMP. We want to start projects in waste water reuse and start and complete programmes for providing and linking sewerage networks in the newly-added areas. There are plans to improve e-governance activities in BWSSB and start with bulk flow meters to bring greater accountability in the use of water and put in place measures to reduce unaccounted-for water.
— Lata Krishnarao, BWSSB Chairperson
I have no specific resolutions for the new year. However, I will continue to do what is expected of me for Bangalore City. The same also forms my personal resolution.
— Bipin Gopalkrishna, Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order)
My resolution is to see firemen to be healthy and be in a ready position to fight the fire. The year should be fire-free and injury-free for the firemen. My plan for the City includes setting up of another four fire stations.
— T Suneel Kumar, DIG, Karnataka State Fire and Emergency Services
