A 'cultural' year
By Bhakti V Hegde, DH News Service, Mangalore:
Dakshina Kannada district which has a rich history of culture and rich heritage of art forms witnessed a eventful year 2007.

As far as literature is concerned undivided Dakshina Kannada became the hub of literary meets, hosting some of the much awaited and sought after literary meets.

Akhila Bharatha Kannada Sahithya Sammelana, under the presidentship of Profr L S Sheshagiri Rao was held in Udupi for four days, which was indeed a glorious event for the people here as they firstly got an opportunity to see some of the greatest writers of Kannada literature. The sammelana was last held in Mangalore in 1997 and in Manipal in 1960.

Alva’s Nudisiri, a Kannada literary meet was held at Moodabidri, which was inaugurated by novelist Vyasaraya Ballal and eminent lexicographer Prof G Venkatasubbaiah was the president. Alva’s Virasat 07 honoured Tabla maestro with the Virasat award this year at Moodabidri.

Sarva Dharma Sammelana hosted at Shree Kshethra Dharmasthala was held this year with danseuse Sonal Mansingh herself coming down to inaugurate the event. Quite interestingly, Sonal Mansingh had participated in the Sammelana 25 years ago when Dr D Veerendra Heggade took over the reigns of Dharmasthala. Former President A P J Abdul Kalam too participated in the event making it a memorable one.

Dance and Music
Sangeeth Natak Academy along with Shri Devi Nrithya Kendra Mangalore and Kalkura Prathishtana organised ‘Nrithya Prathibha Utsav’ bringing together some of the art forms from various states across the nation which was inaugurated by none other than Kathak artist Guru Maya Rao herself.

Musically, the year was a melodious one as Mangaloreans got an opportunity to witness and hear some of the best musicians of the times. Sangeeth Bharathi Foundation brought Maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Ustad Zakhir Hussain, Praveen Godkindi and some of the other wellknown artistes to enthrall the Mangalorean audiences through their breath taking performances.

Kalkura Foundation organised Krishna Vesha Sparde even this year which was participated by hundreds of little children dressed up as Shree (little) Krishna.

Music education went online with the City-based Mani Krishnaswamy Academy launching live music education on internet Prarthana Rao as its tutor.

Films
As far as Tulu films and dramas were concerned, 2007 was not as encouraging as the previous year. Only one film ‘Badi’ was released to the screen. Vijay Kumar Kodialbail’s ‘Kutumba’ was well received by the audience this year while Navin Padil’s ‘Benpini Vori, Thinpini Vori’ saw substantial success.

Kolyur Ramachandra Rao received the Kendra Sangeeth Natak Academy Award, which is the first ever award conferred for Thenku Thittu Yakshagana style.

Kalkura Foundation organised a host of Yakshagana programmes including Yaksha Utsav bringing together Yakshagana artists from Uttara Kannada and undivided DK.  First Kala Vikasa Sahithya Sammelana in Mangalore  and Akhila Bharath Yakshagana Sahithya Sammelana in Udupi were also organised by the Foundation.
