Man is a social animal, and the trend of people not opting for marriage is a cause for worry. And today, the situation is such that many people do not know what to do with their time. Most of the period of their life, which otherwise could have been spent with their families, gets wasted in worrying about what to do, as they are not married and do not have families, said Sri Basava Mahalinga Swamiji.
He was speaking at the Sarvadharma Vadhuvara Samavesha organised at the Jayadeva Vidyarthi Nilaya recently.
In order to save people the hassle of searching for brides and grooms, the Basava Kendra will organise a monthly matrimonial meet for people of all religions, at different places, he said, urging the people in general - and the poor in particular - to make use of this opportunity.
No extravaganza
He advised the youngsters not to incur unnecessary expenditure on their weddings.
“Such a lot of money is wasted simply because some people want to show off that they held a grand wedding,” he said.
District Sharana Sahitya Parishat president Dr D N Yogish rued the fact that marriage, which was once a holy relationship, is today viewed as an obstacle.
“Basavanna, who tried to eliminate all discrimination in society, preached that one must follow simplicity in all walks of life. Today, we have made weddings a very expensive affair. People even borrow money so that they can organise grand weddings. We should try to put an end to this and celebrate marriages in a simple way ” he said. Many people from various religions and castes took part in the programme.
