25 LTTE rebels killed in clashes with army

Sri Lankan fighter jets on Monday pounded a LTTE training camp at rebel held Mulaithivu as gunbattles with the Army left at least 25 Tamil Tiger rebels and two soldiers dead in the island nations embattled north.

Several army personnel and LTTE cadres were injured in the fierce clashes in the area, the Media Centre for National Security said on Monday.

Bombed
“Sri Lanka Air Force have bombed a militant training camp located in Mulaithiuvu this morning. The fighter jets launched from Katunayake air base have bombed the rebel camp around 7.15 am local   time,” it said. The target has been identified as a training base which conducts both recruit and refresher training for the LTTE cadres, it said, adding the target was accurately hit.

Meanwhile, in another incident, LTTE triggered off a claymore mine targeting security forces’ convoy of buses. According to the available information the explosion took place close to the Kallai Aru Bridge on the Mannar-Madavachchiya road in northern Sri Lanka. Three navy sailors and one soldier were injured in the explosion. The injured were rushed to the Anuradhapura hospital in north-central Sri Lanka, the defence ministry said, adding one of them was in critical condition. Defence official in Mannar said the convoy was carrying unarmed security personnel going on leave for the New Year.

Killed
In gunbattles in the embattled northern lines, one LTTE militant was gunned down at Navatkulam on the Vavuniya front while four LTTE militants were killed at Pokkaravani in the region on Sunday, the Defence Ministry said.

One soldier also lost his life at Pokkaravani, the defence ministry said.
