Farmers have got a bunch of good news from the government on the Sankranti eve.
First, the distressed sugarcane farmers need no longer find their own produce sore: Governor Rameshwar Thakur, after chairing the State Executive Committee meeting on Friday, promised the government will come out with a package to solve their problems. Mr Thakur said a high-level committee will be set up to find a permanent solution.
The executive committee also decided to send its revival proposal for NGEF to the Centre.
Protest rally
Earlier, hundreds of farmers held a protest demonstration in front of Raj Bhavan on Friday. They are demanding increase in minimum support price and clearance of all dues by sugar factories.
Farmers, led by Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha leaders, picketed the Raj Bhavan. Their rally, which began from City Railway Station, passed through Anand Rao Circle before culminating at Basaveshwar Circle. Traffic movement in and around Majestic, Anand Rao Circle, KR Circle, Basaveshwara Circle and Raj Bhavan was disrupted for some time.
Over 13,000 farmers from Mysore, Mandya, Chamarajnagar, Chitradurga, Shimoga, Belgaum, Bidar and Gulbarga participated.
