Coffee Research Station has informed that the farmers without any scientific background have been saying that the new variety of Coffee called ‘Chandragiri’ is an old plant which was released by the Coffee Board about 10 years ago under the name ‘Sachimore’ and ‘Nandi’
A release from the centre said that the mother plant of Chandragiri was brought to the centre way back in 1975 from Portugal and tests were conducted on the second generation plant from 1975 to 1981.
The plants produced (second genration) from the mother plant were temporarily named as ‘Sachimore’ then and was distributed to some growers to find its features and the yeilding capacities.
Third generation of plants were created after attending to the problems that were found in the seond generation plants after continued experiments and studies, which took about 18 years.
The purified third generation plant seeds were selected and a variety of coffee plant called ‘Chandragiri’ was evolved in 1999.‘Chandragiri’ was then given on experimental basis to the growers. These plants were planted in the plantation for studies and in the centre too studies were conducted to record its features, reactions and yield.
Experts’ opinion
In 2002, 2005 and 2007, the studied facts were duiscussed with some of the experts and the name ‘Chandragiri’ was decided upon, which was released in India in presence of some of the celebrated scientists like Prof M S Swaminathan and Prof C N R Rao.
The press release said that linking the imaginary and the experimental name ‘Sachimore’ to the evolved variety ‘Chandragiri’ is incorrect.
